First Hospital Stay
Keldan & Lucas usually stay fairly healthy thanks to probiotic, just an occasional cold..well this winter the flu bug (intestinal) has decided to attack them. They both had several over the past few months but always just one of them at a time. This one decided to really attack them both at the same time. Keldan started it Saturday & Lucas Sunday. I usually would just try to pump as much liquids as I could and after a few days they would start to kick back. By Wed they were still really miserable so I figured I better give their doctor a call. What started out as a phone call to the nurse turned into a doctors appointment which turned into a 24 hr hospital stay and ended with a 48 hr stay. The doctor could tell right away that they were dehydrated, which I wasn't surprised because I knew they were not getting enough with what was coming out. Lets just say I would have to do 1 load of their clothes at least once a day. They had lost a few pounds & she could tell by their skin & no tears that they were not hydrated enough. So she admitted both of them for IV fluids, blood work, & stool culture.
Knowing we would be there for at least 24 hrs I went home to get their bedtime things. We went up to their room around noon. It took probably an hour or a little more to answer all the questions, takes a little more when theres 2. One thing I appreciated was they take them away to do their IVs then bring them back to the room making mama look like the hero :) It was almost 2 until they were finished with everything. Surprising they didn't mess too much with the IVs, they just didn't like that they were attached to the "DR". Keldan called the iv fluid stand thing (not sure what its called) the doctor. He would occasionally say I'm stuck to the dr or bring the dr if he wanted to move to a different spot.
The blood work did show they were very dehydrated, blood sugar was low, and Lucas' potassium was low, but their white blood cells were normal which meant no infection so that was good. That night was fairly rough. Lucas actually slept in his crib, but he would wake up occasionally and cry a little, I had to sleep in the bed with Keldan. They would come in every hour to check their vitals and the IV. Next morning they repeated the blood work, their numbers still were not where they wanted them to be, so it was looking like another night. They still were only allowed liquids, Keldan finally was allowed toast that eve. The second night went a little better, the boys slept much better. The next morning they repeated blood work, this time their numbers were perfect. After 5 bags of fluid for Keldan and 4 bags for Lucas they were finally hydrated enough. They discharged us around noon. Finally we got to go home! 48 hours in a hospital was enough for me, as they were feeling better they were not impressed with being so confined.
I don't think I've ever been so emotionally & physically exhausted. Things Keldan told me & Lucas' ornery grin is how I made it through! I just love these 2 little boys so much. When I told Keldan we had to go to the doctors so they can help him feel better he told me no, mama does that. He would also tell me mama make them stop if they were checking his vitals or blood work, that was a little rough for me. During the first night, I was with Keldan and the nurses came in to check on Lucas & he didn't see me, he cried and then of course I was crying because I couldnt be over with him. Just a couple of the things that made me cry..oh these pregnancy hormones ;)
Gramps & Grammie and Papa & Meemaw were at the hospital and my old pastor stopped in for prayer. I only left the hospital once that first eve, Joe & I went to taco bell (across the street) for supper, the rest of the time I would just go to the cafeteria to eat real quick or someone would bring something. I wasn't about to leave them very long.
The weekend was still a little rough because they were still weak but yet feeling better, still really needy. We were so thrilled to have that wonderful Sunday to get out and be in some fresh air. They both are feeling better now and silly as can be. Lucas had his 15 month check up, which he was almost back to his weight. The stool culture came back negative for rotavirus so that was a relief, just a bad flu bug.
